Deborah J. Rufus, CFNP
Education
Deb completed her undergraduate BSN in 1982, graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She returned to school and completed her Master of Science, Family Nurse Practitioner tract at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Peoria Campus in 1994. She is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner.

Family Information
Deb has been married for 25 years to her husband Ed, a local Internist. They have 2 children, Ashley, currently in Medical School at the University of Illinois, and Daniel, a sophomore at St. Ambrose University. She has lived in the Peoria area for 23 years.

Hobbies/Interests
“I enjoy spending time with my family and our multiple pets, reading, singing, traveling, and anything sports related! Our kids numerous activities in sports and music keep us hopping!”

What change has impacted the field of cancer the most since you began your nursing career?
“It is the multiple advancements in the therapies, the further understanding and improved management of side effects, and the wide open field of new research.”

Why did you choose oncology/hematology?
“I've been involved in Family Practice and Internal Medicine for over 23 years, and was looking for a new challenge where I could use my skills to further serve patients in our community. The strong sense of hope and purpose among the staff at Illinois CancerCare drew me to this position.”

Do you have any advice to give patients after they have been diagnosed with cancer?
“You aren't alone. Reach out to every support available to you among your family, friends, church and health care team. Remember to take time everyday to laugh and continue to live life to its fullest!”
